4.2 - Faculty Travel Support

The University of Mississippi, through the ORSP, provides institutional support for faculty travel related to research, scholarship, and creative activity.

The primary purpose of Faculty Travel Support is to provide funds for UM faculty members to take part in development activities that will lead to new or extended research, scholarly or creative work. Two primary types of activity are supported:

  • Organized Events: Attend organized meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, or other group activities aimed at professional development, training, or continuing education; may include networking with potential collaborators, project/proposal development with other attendees, discussions with funding agency officials, learning a new technique or application, consulting with expert advisors on a new method or approach, or other professional or project development activities.
  • Individual Visits: Visit funding agencies, academic institutions, regional or national facilities, research collections, libraries, or sites; may include proposal development, setting up new collaborations, learning about funding opportunities, examining original sources or material evidence, collecting documentation, conducting interviews or surveys, utilizing or evaluating special collections, or other scholarly or creative activities.

Highest priority for travel funding is given to junior faculty members, i.e., those below the rank of Associate Professor or Research Associate Professor. For senior faculty, supplemental funds may be available in exceptional cases when the travel is also supported by other institutional sources.

Applications are reviewed monthly throughout the year by a committee convened by the ORSP. Travel awards cover acceptable travel expenses, up to the award amount, incurred in accordance with UM travel policies. Applicants are eligible to receive funding through this program once per UM fiscal year (July 1–June 30) of travel, provided they have submitted all required reports on previous ORSP funding and sufficient funds are available. The maximum possible award per application is $500 for domestic travel or $1,000 for international

Faculty Travel Support guidelines and application materials are posted on the Getting Started page of the ORSP Proposal Development website section under Internal Support.
