9.2 - Reporting, Protecting, and Commercializing Intellectual Property

Inventions by faculty and other university personnel that are made during the normal course of their duties or made using university facilities are the property of The University of Mississippi and should be reported promptly to the Director of Technology Management. University inventors have a responsibility to cooperate with the university in obtaining patent protection and identifying potential commercial partners. The university is obligated to work diligently and in good faith to protect (usually through patents) commercializable technology and to license or otherwise commercialize the technology.

U.S. federal law mandates that recipients of federal grants or contracts must report details of inventions and patents that have originated from the research (37CFR Section 401). Inventors are responsible for noting funding sources on the invention disclosure form and the DTM is responsible for notifying the appropriate agency.
